CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia, July 1. OLYMPIC gold medalist Matt McLean has released a statement to Swimming World regarding his coach Mark Bernardino's retirement, announced today.

"It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to swim under Mark Bernardino. His passion and tenacity for the sport are matched only by his honor, loyalty and integrity, which are some of the hallmark attributes that he works to instill in his athletes.

For 35 years, Mark Bernardino has coached countless young men and women to not only become better athletes, but to become better human beings. Every athlete that has completed the program is better for it.

Mark Bernardino will forever have my undying gratitude and appreciation for believing in me when no one else did, providing me with the lessons and support that I needed to grow as a man, and coaching me to become the athlete that I am today."
