Michael Phelps in the Raven Locker Room after Super Bowl

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 4. ALTHOUGH yesterday's Super Bowl may go down in history primarily for the 34-minute power outage in the third quarter, the Baltimore Ravens' triumph over the San Francisco 49ers struck a chord in the hearts of many fans of Ray Lewis. This includes Michael Phelps, who grew up just outside of the city and swam his career at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under Bob Bowman (except for a short detour when Bowman/Phelps went to Ann Arbor as part of Club Wolverine).

In effect, Phelps and Lewis are Baltimore brothers. Lewis spent the entirety of his professional football career in Baltimore playing for the Ravens (1996-2013). The 37-year-old announced his retirement earlier this season. With last night's 34-31 win, Lewis ended his career in the NFL on a high note.

Phelps got emotional when he met Lewis in the locker room after the Ravens' win.




Phelps tearfully embraced Lewis, telling media afterwards that Lewis had helped him in his career; referencing the passion they both share for their respective sports.

"I'm probably more emotional here," Phelps said, comparing watching Lewis play for the last time to retiring his swimming career at the London Olympics. "It's the last time I'll ever see him play. It's tough for Baltimore people to watch."

Lewis was all smiles when he told Phelps, "You gave me the formula!" Before giving him a kiss on the forehead. The two have spoken openly about their friendship.
