Sean Dougherty Promoted to Replace Bruce Gemmell at Delaware Swim Team

WILMINGTON, Delaware, October 9. THE Delaware Swim Team has announced the resignation of Senior National Coach Bruce Gemmell. Coach Gemmell has accepted a position as Site Director of Nation's Capital Swim Team's Georgetown Prep facility. With this position, Gemmell will take on the responsibility of coaching Olympic Gold Medalist Katie Ledecky. Nation's Capital Swim Team, formally Curl Burke Swim Team, is located at various sites throughout the Washington D.C. Metro area.

The Staff of the Delaware Swim Team would like to congratulate Coach Gemmell on his new position, and wish him the best of luck in this new chapter of his career. Many of the recent accomplishments and accolades earned by the Delaware Swim Team can be attributed to the hard work and commitment Coach Gemmell has given to our club over the last seven years.

Replacing Coach Gemmell as DST's Senior National Coach will be DST's current Program Director Sean Dougherty. Coach Dougherty is entering his 11th year with the team, and has served as Program Director for the last 3 seasons. Dougherty brings eight years of experience working with National caliber athletes, and was Middle Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007.

During his tenure with DST, Coach Dougherty has coached swimmers to numerous US Top 10 rankings, National Records, and Delaware State Championships. As primary coach of the four-time Delaware Swimmer of the Year, Tanner Kurz, Dougherty designed a program to help Kurz set 5 Delaware High School State Records, 7 National Age Group Records, and dozens of Middle Atlantic and Eastern Zone marks. Dougherty will inherit a senior training group that has a tremendous amount of local, national, and international success over the last few seasons.

Delaware State Champions Kaitlyn Jones, Lily Dubroff, Annie Nunes, Bryan Panaccione, and Matt Stasiunas will help lead a very talented and deep group of swimmers that look to keep DST on the National map in upcoming years. Senior Kaitlyn Jones will travel to Moscow on Saturday, and then on to Berlin, as a member of a USA Swimming Team that will compete the FINA World Cup Series.

Also, added to the Senior National coaching staff, will be DST's Rory Connell. Coach Connell will help guide the group on a part time basis, while his primary focus remains coaching DST's Junior National Group. Rory Connell, former Auburn and All American Swimmer, will bring a tremendous amount of knowledge, enthusiasm and experience to the Senior Staff.
