|TIBURON, California, September 7. THE RCP Tiburon is back this weekend, and Swimming World will be on hand to cover both the Tiburon Mile and the Sprint Classic from all angles. Jeff Commings and Shoshanna Rutemiller will both be on hand to capture the brilliance that is all things RCP as created by founder Bob Placak.
Placak founded the Tiburon Mile in 1999, with swimmers and fans coming together in Tiburon, Calif., to celebrate the exciting open water sport. The RCP Tiburon Mile features a $10,000 winner-take-all grand prize for both the men's and the women's fields, and has been won by a global field of competitors. Last year, Kane Radford and Melissa Gorman captured the Elite Male and Female titles. Overall, the Tiburon Mile, that also features Elite, Age Group and Wet Suit division competition, has raised more than $1 million to benefit charities. This year will be no different as another elite field of competitors will vie for the $10,000 grand prizes on Sept. 9.
In 2010, Placak decided to expand what already had proven to be an ultimate swim excursion weekend with the RCP Sprint Classic. Held in a backyard pool with a regulation two-lane 25-yard configuration, sprinters also battle it out for an ultimate $10,000 prize with charities such as the USA Swimming Foundation and the Hospice By The Bay benefiting from funds raised as part of the competition. Josh Schneider won the initial competition.
The Sprint Classic will take place Sept. 8 from 3-6 p.m., and will feature plenty of enjoyable exhibitions of speed. The Sprint Classic will feature the likes of Fred Bousquet, Schneider and Jimmy Feigen as well as Dana Vollmer, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace and Kara Lynn Joyce in a new women's division. Additionally, Matt Biondi and Tom Jager will do battle in a Legends race, while Rowdy Gaines will compete as part of a Battle of the Sexes against the women.
Full coverage of both events will be available at our landing page.
