COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, July 14. AT the PVS Senior Long Course Championships held on the campus of the University of Marlyand last night, Cassidy Bayer, 12, of Curl Burke, lowered a U.S. National Age Group record in the 100-meter fly.
Bayer won the open senior event with a 1:02.31, in front of Curl Burke teammate Kaitlin Pawlowicz (1:03.50). Bayer's time lowered the girls 11-12 100-meter fly U.S. National Age Group record previously held by Dana Vollmer. Vollmer posted a time of 1:02.49 back in 2001. Vollmer has gone on to an illustrious career in the sport as a multiple-time Olympian.
Last month, Bayer downed the 11-12 girls 200-meter fly U.S. National Age Group record with a 2:18.61 in the event at a Potomac Marlins meet. That effort eclipsed the 2:19.32 set by North Baltimore's Courtney Kalisz back in 2003. Kalisz retired from the sport after college, and has been pursuing a DJ career in California.
