USA Swimming Sectionals, Ft. Lauderdale: Gator Swim Club, Westminster Academy and Metro Aquatic Club Rule the Pool on First Night

FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida, July 12. GATOR Swim Club earned the only two individual event titles of the night, while Metro Aquatic Club and Westminster Academy claimed all four of the sprint relays during the first night of finals at the Ft. Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

Yanel Pinto of Gator Swim Club outlasted the field in the women's 1500m free, winning in a time of 16:53.21. St. Petersburg's Autumn Finke hung with Pinto for most of the race but couldn't close the gap, finishing second in 16:56.84. Adirondack Aquatics' Stephanie Nasson earned third in 17:11.02.

In the men's 800m free, Alejandro Gomez, also of Gator Swim Club, won by a solid margin in 8:13.18. Logan Samuelson of Swim Florida touched seven seconds back in 8:20.44, followed by Santa Clara's Eric Ress, who turned in an 8:21.73 for third.

The women's 200m medley relay came down to the touch, with Metro Aquatic Club and South Florida Aquatics finishing in a dead heat at 2:00.77. Golden Panther Aquatics was right behind in 2:00.95. Two events later, Metro Aquatics claimed first in the women's 200m free relay, this time by a tenth of a second, in 1:48.51. Area Tallahassee touched second in 1:48.61, followed by Golden Panther Aquatics in 1:49.90.

Westminster Academy dominated the men's relays, taking first and third in the medley relay (1:45.61 and 1:49.94) and first and second in the free relay (1:35.05 and 1:37.03). Metro Aquatic Club split the squads, finishing second in the medley relay in 1:49.37, while Davie Nadadores placed third in the free relay in 1:37.58.

Through the first six events, Area Tallahassee leads the women's meet with 153 points, while Westminster Academy leads the men's standings with 178 points.
