BISMARCK, North Dakota, June 14. THE U.S. Paralympic Swimming Trials kicked off today with a bang as three world records were set in Bismarck, N.D. The meet will take place June 14-16.
Jessica Long blasted a trio of world records during the first night. She opened the evening with a scorching-fast time of 4:44.17 in the women's S8 400 free. That time clipped her world and American record of 4:44.92 set in Aug. 2011.
Long returned at the end of the evening with a smoking time of 1:28.53 in the women's SB7 100 breast. That swim crushed her world and American record of 1:31.00 set in July 2009. On the way to that record-breaking swim, Long reset her global standard of 44.19 in the 50 breast with a 42.07.
Victoria Arlen snared the women's S6 400 free world record with a time of 5:24.46. That effort cleared the 5:25.20 set by Eleanor Simmonds of Great Britain in July 2011.
Rebecca Meyers clocked a 4:34.63 in the women's S13 400 free to smash Kelley Becherer's American record of 4:37.50 set in Sept. 2008 at the Paralympics. Ian Silverman posted a 4:1.96 in the men's S10 400 free, obliterating the American record of 4:15.83 set by Joe Wise at the 2008 Paralympics.
Colleen Young edged Kelley Becherer in the women's SB13 100 breast race, 1:23.15 to 1:23.42, as both beat Young's American record of 1:24.54 set in March 2012. Anna Johannes posted a 1:23.54 in the women's SB8 100 breast for an American record of her own. That time eclipsed the 1:26.14 she set in April of this year.
Rudy Garcia-Tolson turned in a 1:23.81 in the men's SB7 100 breast. He downed his American record of 1:24.01 set in Sept. 2008. Dalton Herendeen followed up with a 1:19.21 in the men's SB8 100 breast to clip Jarrett Perry's American record of 1:19.44 also at the 2008 Paralympics.
Kayla Wheeler far surpassed her American record in the women's SB1 50 breast with a 2:16.24. That time blasted the 2:29.27 she set at the Jimi Flowers meet in February of this year. Alyssa Gialamas smashed her American record in the women's S5 200 free with a time of 3:17.07. That performance cleared the 3:22.24 she set in Nov. 2011.
