Santa Clara International Grand Prix: FAST’s Tyler Clary Doubles; Bronte Barratt Sets Meet Record

SANTA CLARA, California, June 2. TYLER Clary picked up two wins in the men's 400 IM and 200 back, while Australia's Bronte Barratt set a new meet record in the women's 200 free to highlight the third finals session at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix.

A great race took shape in the opening event between Australia's Stephanie Rice, the world record-holder and defending Olympic champion, and Caitlin Leverenz in the women's 400 IM. Rice held off Leverenz on the breaststroke leg and finished in a time of 4:35.87, while Leverenz would up second in 4:37.13. Zhao Min of China touched in 4:40.67 for third. In the men's 400 IM, FAST's Tyler Clary took charge from the start and never let up, finishing in 4:15.02. Japan's Yuya Horihata cut down a bit of Clary's lead over the final 100 with a 4:16.27. Joshua Prenot of Santa Maria took third in 4:18.77.

Already a double event winner last night, California's Dana Vollmer tried to make it three-for-three in the 200 free. Vollmer took the race out quickly, but Australia's Bronte Barratt had the edge the last 15 meters, surging to a new meet record of 1:57.17, just .01 under her old record. Vollmer finished in 1:57.25, while Japan's Hanae Ito took the bronze in 1:58.45. Vollmer is now ranked tenth in the world, while Barratt already held the fourth-best time of 1:55.99.

Korea's Tae Hwan Park continued his sensational meet with yet another victory, this time in the men's 200 free. Park took the race out hard and finished in 1:46.88, not far off his best time this year of 1:46.09. Australia's Ryan Napoleon swam a 1:48.66 for second, while Yuki Kobori of Japan rounded out the top three in 1:49.36.

Australia's Meagan Nay continued her consistent swimming with a 2:08.04 in the women's 200 back, within striking distance of her fastest time this year, 2:07.83. Fellow Aussie Emily Seebohm posted a 2:08.88 for second, followed by Canada's Hillary Caldwell in 2:11.41. Tyler Clary picked up his second victory of the evening with a stellar 1:57.90 in the men's 200 back, not far off his best 2012 time of 1:57.63 from April. Japan's Kazuki Watanabe snuck into second position with a 1:59.56, ahead of Australia's Ashley Delaney (2:00.14).

In the last individual event, the 50 free, Australia's Yolane Kukla dipped under 25 with a 24.97 for first. Madison Kennedy of SwimMAC Carolina took second in 25.05, while Australia's Libby Trickett was third in 25.22. California's Anthony Ervin continued his successful comeback with a winning effort of 22.35 in the men's 50 free. Teammate William Copeland was second (22.74) and Japan's Takuro Fujii third (22.86).

The men's and women's 800 free relays closed out the meet.
