Nearly 40 National Records Set At US Masters Nationals; SwimMAC Elite Team Puts on Show

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, April 29. OLYMPIANS, national team members and Hall of Famers highlighted the 2012 United States Masters short course national championships, where 38 national records were broken over four days.

A few members of the SwimMAC-Carolina Elite team came to the meet to race in the new Greensboro Aquatic Center, which officially opened a few months ago. Cullen Jones, Josh Schneider and Tim Phillips were just a few of the USA Swimming national team members providing showstopping swims in their preparations for the Olympic Trials, while several established Masters swimmers, such as Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, Laura Val and Clay Britt, were on record-breaking streaks.

One of the highlights of the meet was the men's 50 freestyle, in which Schneider, Jones and Nick Brunelli each broke 20 seconds, swimming in different heats. (Seeding at USMS nationals is by age group, not by time.) Schneider posted the fastest swim with a 19.36 in the 18-24 age group, with Jones touching at 19.53 in the 25-29 age group and Brunelli posting a 19.87 in the 30-34 age group.

Even SwimMAC head coach David Marsh got in on the action, swimming a 23.87 in the anchor leg of the men's 200 free relay (which saw a 19.12 from Schneider and a 19.20 from Jones).
