|FORT MYERS, Florida, April 27. ANDREW Gemmell broke from the pack with about 1000 meters remaining to win the USA Swimming national 10K title over a pair of swimmers from the Mission Viejo Nadadores.
Gemmell finished in one hour, 58 minutes and three seconds. Janardan Burns got to the finish in 1:58:12, while teammate David Heron was right behind in 1:58:15.
Alex Meyer, who qualified to swim in the Olympic 10K after placing fourth at last summer's world championships, placed 10th in today's race with a 1:58:47. Meyer broke his collarbone in a bicycle accident in January. Today marked his first competition since the accident.
With Meyer qualifying for London at the world championships, no other spot is open for an American male to swim the 10K in the Olympics, according to FINA qualification rules. Today's swim marks Gemmell's first national title in open water, after placing third in 2010 and 2011 in the 10K.
