MISSION VIEJO, California, April 19. THE TYR Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions kicked off with distance night at the home pool of the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton led the way in the women's 800 free with an 8:26.68. That swim vaulted her to fifth in the world rankings behind only Rebecca Adlington (8:18.54), Xin Xin (8:22.76), Mireia Belmonte (8:25.55) and Kylie Palmer (8:26.60). Minnesota's Ashley Steenvoorden claimed second in 8:32.93, while Mission Viejo's Ashley Twichell wound up third in 8:40.88. Notably, Janet Evans, 40, swimming for Golden West placed sixth in 8:46.89.

Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette, fresh off setting the American record in the men's 1650-yard freestyle at NCAAs last month, won the men's 1500 free in 15:09.55. The swim pushed him to 17th in the world rankings with the effort. Mission Viejo's David Heron, 17, placed second in 15:46.01, while BCH Heatwave's Dylan Bunch claimed third in 15:48.64.

This meet, formerly known as just the TYR Swim Meet of Champions, has memorialized Fran Crippen by enshrining him in the meet title. Crippen, a former Mission Viejo Nadador, passed away Oct. 2010 while competing at the FINA Open Water 10K World Cup event in the United Arab Emirates.
