Purdue Invitational: Martin Grodzki Enters Long Course Season After Setting 1650 Free NCAA Record

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 31. NEWLY-minted NCAA record holder Martin Grodzki of Georgia checked in with a 15:27.27 to win the men's 1500 free at the Purdue Invitational, which served as the overflow meet this week for the overbooked USA Swimming Grand Prix held in Indianapolis.

Grodzki is just a week away from breaking the legendary men's 1650-yard freestyle NCAA and U.S. Open record of Chris Thompson (14:26.62) with an astonishing 14:24.08. He dueled Stanford's Chad La Tourette in the effort, as La Tourette wound up with the American record with a 14:24.35 in the closest 1650-yard freestyle race in NCAA history.

Fiat Minas' Lucas Kanieski (15:31.76) and Marco Oliveira (15:50.10) finished second and third in the men's 1500 free tonight. Roxanne Tammadge turned in an 8:53.77 to win the women's 800 free, while Nicole Chang took second in 8:55.64. La Mirada's Samantha Shellem picked up third in 8:59.23.

Bridget Casey topped the women's 200 fly with a 2:16.34, just edging the Olympic Trials cut in the event. Corinthians' Yana Medeiros took second in 2:17.32, while Melissa Scott finished third in 2:18.42. Notably, Kat Bachrouche led qualifying with a 2:16.28, but scratched the finale.

Fiat Minas' Leonardo Fim led the way in the men's 200 fly with a 2:03.79, while Purdue's Alec La Mothe took second in 2:04.78. Corinthians' Arthur Filho picked up third in 2:04.97. Kyle Whitaker topped prelim qualifying with a 2:01.96, while Marco Oliveira (2:02.56) and Andrew Wrist (2:04.21) went second and third in the prelim heats.

Carissa Gormally won the women's 100 breast in 1:11.93, while Lysi Halkiddis took second in 1:12.09. Imelda Wistey finished third in 1:12.77. Keisuke Yagi posted a 1:03.94 to win the men's 100 breast, while Matheus Neto took second in1:04.38. Purdue's Albert Miller wound up third in 1:05.24.

Ukrainian Olympian Kate Fesenko, still on the comeback trail after becoming a mother, edged Swim Utah's Traycie Swartz, 1:02.49 to 1:02.63, in the women's 100 back. Rebecca Baxley placed third in 1:04.00. Corinthians Fernando Santos took the men's 100 back title in 55.53. Swim Utah's Major Robinson tied Fiat Minas' Glauber Silver for second with matching 57.60s. Purdue's Brian Kiel led prelims with a 56.78 before scratching finals.

Swim Utah's Nicole Ligeza claimed the women's 200 IM crown in 2:20.04. Fiat Minas' Manuella Lyrio (2:21.99) and Corinthians' Rebecca Bretanha (2:23.23) completed the podium. Arden Hills' Katherine Edwards (2:22.88) and Missouri's Rachel Ripley (2:23.60) went 2-3 in prelim qualifying before scratching. Corinthians' Renato Barufi snared the men's 200 IM in 2:05.94, while Purdue's Jacob McGough took second in 2:06.15. Andrew Porter wound up third in 2:07.36. Missouri's Yaniv Shnaider posted the top prelim time in 2:06.29 before scratching.
