Purdue Invitational: Day Two in the Books

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, March 30. THE Purdue Invitational, the overflow meet for the fully-booked USA Swimming Grand Prix down the road in Indianapolis, featured another night of long course meter competition.

Purdue's Megan Gallagher won the women's 400 IM in 4:59.11, while Fiat Minas' Larissa Cieslak took second in 5:04.79. Pine Richland's Kristen Murslack finished third in 5:05.85. Michigan's Kyle Whitaker topped the men's 400 IM in 4:24.26, while Brennan Morris also cleared the Olympic Trials cut with a second-place 4:29.57. Missouri's Yaniv Shnaider turned in a third-place time of 4:31.42.

Fiat Minas' Manuella Lyrio topped the women's 200 free in 2:01.80, just off Mary DeScenza's pool record of 2:01.05 from 2006. Kat Bachrouche placed second in 2:02.33, while Longhorn's Kendra Stern snared third in 2:03.21. Fiat Minas swept the podium in the men's 200 free with Rodrigo Castro (1:52.32), Marco Oliveira (1:52.88) and Lucas Kanieski (1:53.54) placing 1-2-3 in the event. Notably, Corinthians' Fernando Santos (1:51.25) and Fiat Minas (1:54.81) qualified into the A final in prelims, but scratched.

Ukrainian Olympian Kate Fesenko, still on the comeback trail after having a child, dominated the women's 200 back in 2:12.13. Veronica Medon touched second in 2:17.48, while Pointe's Gabrielle Deloof finished third in 2:18.50. Fiat Minas' Leonardo Fim led the men's 200 back finale with a 2:02.05. Swim Utah's Major Robinson (2:03.66) and Ryutaro Kamiya (2:03.77) rounded out the top three. Santos topped prelims with a 2:03.79, but scratched this event as well.

Swim Utah's Traycie Swartz turned in a 25.77 to win the women's 50 free, just off Martin Moravcova's 2006 pool record of 25.65. Miami's Kelsi Hall took second in 25.86, while SoFlo's Jessie Alcaide placed third in 26.19. Santos, who focused on the men's 50 free tonight, led the way with a 23.33 for the win. Kaan Tayla finished second in 23.40, while Florida's James Turner earned third in 23.44.
