North Baltimore Christmas Meet: Michael Phelps Completes Final Short Course Meet With Two More Wins

By David Rieder

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, December 11. THE North Baltimore Christmas meet wrapped up today at the U.S. Naval Academy, and with the meet ended the short course career of the great Michael Phelps.

North Baltimore's Phelps won the 200 back in 1:39.72 and the 100 free in 43.43. In the 200 back, he swam his lifetime best and moved to eighth all-time. On Twitter, Phelps noted that his mother and sister came to the meet to time his last race, which he described as a "cool finish to my short course career." Phelps plans to retire after the London Olympics and could never get another shot to compete in a meet of this format.

Germantown's Arthur Frayler blasted a 14:47.02 in the men's 1650 free, while North Baltimore's Gillian Ryan swam a 15:53.55 in the women's 1650, and teammate Allison Schmitt took the 100 free in 49.25. NBAC's Willa Wang took the women's 200 fly in 2:00.17, with Schmitt posting a faster 1:59.69 in the B-final. NBAC's Chris Brady grabbed first in the men's 200 fly in 1:45.71. Germantown's Rachel Zilinskas took the women's 200 back in 1:56.43.
