By David Rieder

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, December 9. THE North Baltimore Christmas Meet kicked off at the U.S. Naval Academy today with top swimmers such as Allison Schmitt, Michael Phelps, and Arthur Frayler tallying some wins on the first night of short course yards action.

North Baltimore's Schmitt took the wins in both the women's 200 free and 100 fly. Schmitt clocked 1:41.90 in the 200 free, the third-fastest swim of all time, just shy of Dana Vollmer's American record of 1:41.53, while Natalie Coughlin has swum 1:41.66. Schmitt's previous best had stood at 1:42.08 from the NCAA Championships in March. Schmitt later returned to take the 100 fly in 53.23.

Phelps, also of NBAC, swept the men's 200 free and 200 IM in dominating fashion. He clocked 1:33.30 in the 200 free, well shy of his best time of 1:32.08 from 2005 which stands sixth on the all-time list. Phelps later clocked 1:43.85 in the 200 IM, off of his third-ranked career best of 1:40.58 from last year. Only Ryan Lochte (1:40.08) and Bradley Ally (1:40.49) have ever swum faster.

Germantown's Arthur Frayler blasted the men's 1000 free to win in 8:52.88, moving to ninth on the all-time list in the event. Notably, Frayler now stands within a second of former Germantown teammate Fran Crippen's lifetime best of 8:52.12. Frayler and Crippen trained together at Germantown up until Crippen's tragic death in an open water swim in Dubai in October of 2010.

North Baltimore's Gillian Ryan moved up to eighth all-time in the women's 1000 free with a victory in 9:32.71. Ryan won the U.S. Long Course National title in August in the 800 free. Also tonight, Germantown's Rachel Zalinskas moved into the top-15 with her 9:36.32.

North Baltimore's Jordan Surhoff won the women's 100 breast in 1:02.95, while teammate Chase Kalisz took the men's 100 breast in 55.11. NBAC's Chris Brady dominated the men's 100 fly in 46.63, and Willa Wang, yet another NBAC swimmer, posted a 2:00.21 for the win in the women's 200 IM.
