USA Swimming Winter Nationals: Brendan Hansen Wins 100 Breast

ATLANTA, Georgia, December 2. IN his first head-to-head battle with Kosuke Kitajima since the 2008 Beijing Olympics when Kitajima swept the breaststroke events, Brendan Hansen won the men's 100 breast tonight at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals.

While Kitajima is obviously in deep training and faded to fifth in 1:01.18, Hansen got the monkey off his back with a head-to-head win in 1:00.31. That swim beat his preliminary time of 1:00.43, but missed his ninth-ranked season best of 1:00.08 from Summer Nationals. Marcus Titus took second tonight in 1:00.66 for 21st in the rankings, while Mike Alexandrov placed third in 1:00.88.

Mark Gangloff (1:01.08), Neil Versfeld (1:01.40), Carlos Almeida (1:01.44), Felipe Lima (1:01.74), Eric Shanteau (1:01.95) and Damir Dugonjic (1:02.02) clinched the rest of the championship finishes.

Scott Weltz placed first in the B final with a 1:01.65. Scott Dickens took second in 1:01.95. Vlad Polyakov (1:02.07), Kevin Swander (1:02.23), Kameron Chastain (1:02.32), Clark Burckle (1:02.64), Valentin Preda (1:02.64), Elliot Keefer (1:02.78), Mike Brown (1:02.89) and Kevin Puskaric (1:02.95) rounded out the consolation heat.

Martti Aljand won the C final in 1:01.98, while Ed Moses finished second in 1:02.11. Nicholas Ferrif (1:02.18), Nelson Westby (1:02.51), Arni Arnason (1:02.74), Valerii Dymo (1:02.79), Matti Mattsson (1:03.17), Bernard Johnson (1:03.19), Eric Knight (1:03.80) and Adam Ritter (1:04.14) also swam in the bonus finale.
