USA Swimming Long Course Nationals: Youngster Gillian Ryan Wins 800 Free

PALO ALTO, California, August 6. PARKLAND's Gillian Ryan, 15, surprised the field with a winning effort in the women's 800 free at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

The youngster turned in an 8:27.64 for the win, moving to 12th in the world ranking in the event. She now stands third in the U.S. behind Kate Ziegler (8:23.36) and Chloe Sutton (8:24.05) this year. Trojan's Haley Anderson could not reel in Ryan, who made her move halfway through the race, and wound up with a second-place 8:29.19. She moved to 19th in the world rankings with the swim.

Mission Viejo's Ashley Twichell completed the top three with a time of 8:35.20, while Germantown's Rachel Zilinskas finished fourth in 8:36.06.

Minnesota's Ashley Steenvoorden, the 400 free winner, took fifth in 8:36.83, while NBAC's Camryne Morris touched sixth in 8:37.40. FAST's Emily Brunemann (8:37.45), Aquazot's Megan Rankin (8:37.93), SwimAtlanta's Amber McDermott (8:38.53) and NOVA's Rachel Naurath (8:43.95) also swam in the finale.
