USA Swimming Long Course Nationals: Garrett Weber-Gale Leads Longhorn 1-2 in Men’s 100 Free

PALO ALTO, California, August 5. LONGHORN's Garrett Weber-Gale gave his squad a 1-2 finish in the men's 100 free at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

Weber-Gale grabbed his second career national title in the event with a 48.87, short of his season best of 48.49 from Worlds that ranks him 15th in the world. Teammate Jimmy Feigen snared silver with a 48.99, while Scot Robison rounded out the top three with a time of 49.06. Weber-Gale's superior turn provided him just enough to pick up the victory.

Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers (49.22), Club Wolverine's Bobby Savulich (49.39), SwimMAC's Nick Brunelli (49.40), California's William Copeland (49.66), SwimMAC's Davis Tarwater (49.70), Ricky Berens (49.70) and Longhorn's Dax Hill (50.57) made up the rest of the championship heat.

California's Tom Shields overcame the worst reaction time of the field to win the B final in 49.77, while Tyler Reed (49.88) and Dave Walters (49.99) both cleared 50 seconds in the consolation heat. Stanford's Aaron Wayne claimed the C final title in 50.50 with Paul Gordon of Iowa touching a close second in 50.54.
