PALO ALTO, California, August 3. COLORADO Stars' Missy Franklin put together a sterling time in the women's 100 back with a sub-1:00 effort to win the national title at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

Franklin, who just returned from Shanghai and a breakout meet at the FINA World Long Course Championships, finished with a 59.18 for the win. That put her fifth in the world this year, and second best amongst the women. Zhao Jing (59.05), Anastasia Zueva (59.06), Natalie Coughlin (59.12) and Aya Terakawa (59.17) are the top four swimmers this year. The win is Franklin's first national title after winning her first world title last week.

Meanwhile, Swimming World Female High School Co-Swimmer of the Year Rachel Bootsma of the Aquajets took second in a personal best 59.65. That performance moved her up to eighth in the world, and ahead of Elizabeth Pelton (1:00.14) for the third best effort by an American.

Tennessee's Jennifer Connolly picked up third-place honors in 1:00.72, while Athens Bulldog Megan Romano tied Pelton for fourth in 1:00.87.
