USA Swimming Sectionals, Atlanta: Fred Bousquet, Cesar Cielo Scorch 50 Frees; Abbie Fish Dominates

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 14. WHILE Fred Bousquet and Cesar Cielo provided the top-end fireworks with some scintillating 50 frees, Lakeside's Abbie Fish authored one of the most dominant meets of her life at the USA Swimming Sectional held in Atlanta, Ga., this weekend.

Bousquet and Cielo both dropped sub-22 50 frees in front of those in attendance at the meet held on the campus of Georgia Tech. Bousquet, who will not be competing in the event at the 2008 Beijing Games, won in 21.53 ?” the fifth-fastest of all time. Cielo, meanwhile, became the 10th best ever with a second-place time of 21.75. See video of the swim below. Cielo would also win the 100 free in 48.61.

In the women's meet, no one could touch Fish. The aptly-named swimmer walked away with an astounding 10 gold medals. Fish snared the top podium spot in the 50 free (26.88), 100 free (57.04), 200 free (2:02.52), 400 free (4:19.06), 100 fly (1:01.71), 200 fly (2:13.18) and 400 IM (4:54.98) to account for seven individual golds.

Fish also anchored Lakeside's three winning relays. The 400 free squad of Amanda Faulkner, Leah Reinhardt, Meredith King and Fish clocked a winning time of 3:55.09, while Heidi Hatteberg, King, Reinhardt and Fish captured the 800 free in 8:34.23. Finally, Faulkner, Miranda Mercke, Reinhardt and Fish won the 400 medley with a time of 4:23.83.

The distance freestyles went to Duke's Dania Marinshaw (800 free, 9:04.68) and Athens Bulldog Amber Juncker (1500 free, 17:23.60). Other winners included Erin Reisinger of the Rays (100 back: 1:04.29), Kelsey Gaid of the Marlins (200 back: 2:17.12), Layne Brodie of Dynamo (100 breast: 1:13.35), Kristine Polley of the Rays (200 breast: 2:36.79) and Faulkner (200 IM: 2:19.65).

In other men's action, Montgomery YMCA's Woody Joye enjoyed a strong showing. He walked away with three titles by winning the 200 free (1:53.03), 400 free (4:01.74) and 400 IM (4:35.95)

Dillon Connolly of the Marlins also swept the breaststroke events with triumphs in the 100 (1:03.82) and 200 (2:21.61).

Other individual winners include SwimMAC-Carolina's Mack Montgomery (800 free: 8:23.37), North Carolina Aquatics' Yi-Khy Saw (1500 free: 15:59.25), Athens Bulldog's Chris Spooner (100 back: 58.47), Memphis Thunder's Michael Sheppard (200 back: 2:05.96), Auburn's Alexei Puninski (100 fly: 53.07), Pilot's Alex Ward (200 fly: 2:04.85) and SwimAtlanta's Andrejs Duda (200 IM: 2:03.53).

SwimMAC-Carolina claimed two of the three relay titles. Montgomery, Thomas Santoli, Caleb Courage and Bennett Clark grabbed the 400 free in 3:27.86, while Ben Correll, Charles Higgins, Courage and Clark snagged the 800 free in 7:50.58.

The Marietta Marlins' team of Philipp Davydotchkin, Connolly, Drew Onken and Justin Hong picked up the 400 medley relay crown in 3:58.29.
