Y-Spartaquatics Wins South Carolina Open Water State Championships

CLEMSON, South Carolina, June 18. THIS past Saturday swimmers from across the southeast descended upon Lake Hartwell in northwestern South Carolina for the state’s Open Water Championships. The meet included races of 5K, 3K, 1K, and .5K and was open to swimmers of all ages and did not exclude those from outside the state. However, the meet also included a team component where athletes 18 and under could earn points for their club teams in particular events.

For the 10 and under age group, Team Greenville’s Caroline Parker won the 1K in 17:08, while her teammate Giacomo Mezzogori won the boys’ race in 17:59. Clemson Aquatic Team’s Keri Golden won the girls’ 11-12 3K in 45:51, and Team Greenville’s Nathan DePiero won the boys’ in 45:13.

Team Greenville’s Audra McSharry won the 13-14 girls’ 5K in 1:11.05, while SMRT’s Matthew Agostinelli took the boys’ race in 1:12.07. In the 15-18 age group, Y-Spartaquatics’ Savanna Faulconer won the girls’ 5K in 1:09.17. Her teammates Brooks McCoy and Heyward Brown went 1-2 in the boys’ event. McCoy ended up taking the win, 1:03:34 to 1:03.35, after Brown crashed into the buoy holding up the “finish” banner.

Y-Spartaquatics won the team competition with 151 points. Team Greenville took second with 99, and LTP Racing Club took third with 74.

Swimming World contributor David Rieder attended (and swam in) the meet, and he took race footage and interviewed Clemson Aquatic Team head coach Jon Mengering, better known as “Big Show.” Check out the highlights of the event below.
