Thomas Lurz, Emily Brunemann Take Home 2013 FINA 10K World Cup Titles

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, October 5. THE 2013 FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup came to its conclusion today in Hong Kong following the eighth and final race of the circuit. Germany’s Thomas Lurz and the United States’ Emily Brunemann captured the overall men’s and women’s titles based on their total accumulated points throughout the eight races.

Lurz’s seventh-place finish today in Hong Kong brought his overall point total to 100, comfortably ahead of France’s Romain Beraud (86) and Brazil’s Allan do Carmo (78). Lurz won the Shantou (China) and Lac Megantic (Canada) stops on the series en route to the overall title. It is Lurz’s third overall title in the past five years, as he also topped the World Cup standings in 2009 and 2011.

On the women’s side, Emily Brunemann amassed 107 points over the eight events to capture her first World Cup title after finishing eighth last year and fourth in 2011. Brunemann finished first in the Santos (Brazil) and Viedma (Argentina) stops in January and February to cushion her point total. Italy’s Martina Grimaldi (98 points) and defending champion Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil (96 points) rounded out the top three overall finishers.

Samuel de Bona of Brazil topped the men’s field today in Hong Kong with a time of 1 hour, 53 minutes and 34 seconds. Beraud took second in 1:53:35.05, while Rhys Mainstone-Hodson of Australia rounded out the top three in 1:53:35.15.
