Thomas Lurz, Emily Brunemann Win at FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup Stop

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, September 26. THOMAS Lurz (GER) reinforced his lead by winning the sixth leg of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2011 taking place in Shantou, China, on September 25. The reigning world champion in the 5km event took 1h54m22s95 to complete the race, being the only open water swimmer so far to collect two victories in this year's series. Among women, Emily Brunemann (USA) obtained her first podium appearance of the season, touching home in 2h04m52s41. In all, 28 men and 15 women from ten countries took part in the event.

If Lurz was the fastest, Chinese newcomers Zu Lijun and Zhang Zibing were close behind, finishing in 1h54m23s19 and 1h54m26s86, respectively. Winner of the 2010 series Chad Ho (RSA) obtained his best result of the season with a fourth place while Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE), current world champion in the Olympic distance, took fifth (the Greek finished first in Setubal and second in Santos).

Germans Angela Maurer and Nadine Reichert trailed Brunemann until the final sprint but could not match her pace, settling for second (2h04m52s72) and third (2h04m55s78), respectively. Both already count a victory in their season's results: Maurer in Setubal and Reichert in Lac St-Jean.

Germany is well on its way to take the spotlight in this year's World Cup series with Thomas Lurz comfortably leading the men's overall ranking and Angela Maurer the women's. The last race of the 10km World Cup will be held in Hong Kong on October 2.
