Speedo Performance of the Week, Presented By Pace Club: Abbey Weitzeil’s 21.98 50 Freestyle

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 20. SEVEN national high school records fell last weekend in California, and it wasn’t easy picking just one for the Performance of the Week. Does a barrier-breaking relay trump a sub-1:45 200 IM? How does a fast 100 back compare to a fast 100 fly?

In the end, we could not ignore the swims by Abbey Weitzeil at the southern section championships on Saturday, where she broke the national records in the 50 and 100 freestyles. It’s the 50 free that we’re honoring as the performance of the week. Weitzeil swam a 19.98 in the final to become the second swimmer under 22 seconds in high school competition, and broke Olivia Smoliga’s national record by one hundredth of a second. It was also Weitzeil’s first time under 22, with a previous best time of 22.02 from December 2013.

Weitzeil is wrapping up her junior year at Saugus High, so the recruiting calls will be starting with a frenzy very soon. Until then, Weitzeil should enjoy the fact that she is the fastest high school swimmer in history.
