Butcher has been traveling the country extensively in the past six weeks to help promote the Adult Learn-To-Swim initiative by the Swimming Saves Lives Foundation. He talks about the goal of the program to get more bodies in the water and swimming safely. He backs up the mission with a statistic from the Centers for Disease Control, noting that 37 percent of American adults can’t swim a length of the pool. With very few opportunities available for adults to learn to swim, USMS went to work to make sure adults had learn-to-swim programs available in their area through grant money and support from government officials. In this interview, he also talks about his experiences at the short course nationals and laments that the organization wasn’t able to secure the Qwest Center for the 2016 long course nationals.
