Relive 2013 in Covers: SW Magazine Including Anthony Ervin, Diana Nyad, Jessica Hardy

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 25. FOR the second day of Swimming World’s annual holiday rollout, we reflect back on an incredible year with an incredible collection of covers from 2013.

In 2013, Swimming World Magazine underwent a variety of changes, including revamping the look and content of the magazine. We adopted a new SW logo on the cover, and highlighted the look with current and timeless content and features internally.

So, without further ado, enjoy our display of each of the 12 covers from 2013 below!

January 2013

After disappearing from the swimming spotlight for nearly a decade after retiring from the sport in 2003, Anthony Ervin returned at qualified for the U.S. Olympic team that competed in London. This time around, he approaches swimming with a newfound maturity he considered absent before. “Now, I am a swimmer, an educator and learner, but I’m also a rock-and-roller. We’ll see where life takes me,” he says.

February 2013

Katinka Hosszu has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame since she first represented Hungary in the 2004 Olympics. The 23-year-old had since represented her country in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and was the 400 IM world champion in 2009, in addition to earning the 2009 Hungarian Sportswoman of the Year award. In London, she placed fourth in the 400 IM, missing the podium by only a half-second.

March 2013

Cal’s quest for a third straight men’s NCAA Division I championship will undoubtedly be keyed by Tom Shields, the senior short-course stud who is coming off individual crowns in the 100 back and 100 fly, along with a second-place showing in the 200 fly. He could very well close out his college career with a sweep of his individual events.

April 2013

A bout with prostate cancer was not going to keep Bob Strand down. Less than six months after surgery to remove his tumor, he was back in the pool, setting FINA Masters world records for men 65-69. His accomplishments earned him recognition as one of Swimming World Magazine’s Top 12 World Masters Swimmers of the Year for 2012.

May 2013

After finishing runner-up to Cal the last two years at the women’s NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, Georgia used its depth along with some top-end swims to capture its fifth overall women’s title since 1999. The Lady Bulldogs had a number of stars, including Megan Romano, who finished second twice, third once and swam on Georgia’s two winning relays.

June 2013

Life for Jessica Hardy post-Olympics has included a red carpet appearance at the 2013 Grammy Awards as well as an opportunity to race a car in the 37th annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race as part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. At the same time, the former Swimming World female High School Swimmer of the Year in 2005 has mapped out a number of professional goals — both in and out of the pool.

July 2013

Cullen Jones — one of the fastest men in the world in the water — nearly had his life taken from him when he was 5 years old by that very same element. Today, the two-time Olympian and world record holder is an ambassador for the Make a Splash campaign, a child-focused water safety initiative created by the USA Swimming Foundation.

Senior Olivia Smoliga of Glenbrook South High School, Ill., who set two overall national high school records this past season, is Swimming World’s Female High School Swimmer of the Year. She became the first girls’ prep swimmer to crack 22 seconds in the 50 yard free with her 21.99 and lowered the 100 back mark to 51.43

September 2013

Under the leadership of Coach Sergio Lopez (left) and Swimming World’s Male High School Swimmer of the Year Ryan Murphy, The Bolles School of Jacksonville, Fla., secured its fifth overall boys’ national high school team title. It’s also the eighth time the school has finished as the top independent school, a distinction that dates back to 1998.

October 2013

There were several swimmers from the U.S. Junior Nationals in August who showed promise as potential American stars of tomorrow. Among them: Gunnar Bentz, 17, of the Dynamo Swim Club in Georgia. After winning three events at juniors, he won both IMs with championship records (1:59.44, 4:14.97) at the World Junior Championships in Dubai.

It took American Diana Nyad a lifetime to achieve her dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida without the use of a shark cage. Her first attempt came 35 years ago in 1978, and on her fifth try — at the age of 64 — she reached her goal, teaching us all a very valuable lesson: never give up!

Katie Ledecky, who dominated women’s freestyle in 2013, was a clear choice for the top female swimmer in the world. This past year, the 16-year-old American won three individual gold medals at the World Championships in Barcelona, setting world records in the 800 and 1500 and establishing a textile suit world best in the 400.
