Poll of the Week: Top Performance of 2013 (Results)

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 23. WE’RE almost ready to say goodbye to 2013, but before we do, here are the results of last week’s poll on the most impressive performance in the pool in 2013, and the swim that voters picked might not shock you. With 44.10 percent of the vote, Katie Ledecky’s 1500 freestyle world record swim from the world championships was picked as the top swim of the year, which Swimming World, USA Swimming and FINA have also selected as the top performance of 2013. Coming in second with 27.64 percent was Kevin Cordes’ 200-yard breaststroke time of 1:48.68 from the NCAA championships last March to break through 1:50 in a big way. Vlad Morozov’s 17.86 50 freestyle split as part of the 200 free relay at NCAAs was third in the voting with 15.84 percent and Caeleb Dressel’s 18.94 in the 50 free at junior nationals just a couple of weeks ago got 9.01 percent. And 3.42 percent of voters said another swim was more impressive, and picked other.

And now we’re ready to present our final Poll of the Week question for 2013. A lot of big news came out of the world of swimming in the past 52 weeks, and though it was tough to do so, we’ve narrowed the list of the top swimming headlines of the year to just three. Do you believe the biggest swimming headline of the year was Ryan Lochte’s encounter with a fan that caused serious injury to his knee, was it Diana Nyad’s historic swim from Cuba to Florida or was it the news that Michael Phelps is “keeping options open” in terms of a comeback to competitive swimming?
