PHOENIX, Arizona, December 7. THE USA Swimming nationals two weeks ago featured an event program that exactly mirrored the lineup for the NCAA championships. This has been the case since the nationals was moved from the spring to early December back in 2007, with the exception of the 2011 nationals. Obviously this gives the collegiate athletes in attendance a chance to practice their championship season routine and get some automatic qualifying times early. But is it the right move to have this format for the high school swimmers and postgrads in attendance? Apparently it is the right move. In our poll, 69.57 percent said USA Swimming should continue to have the same event lineup as NCAAs for the winter nationals, while 30.43 said no. As I said earlier, this lineup has been used since 2007, so there is likely no chance of it changing.
Now, I know we still have a couple of meets left in 2013, including the Duel in the Pool, but I think it's OK to present our annual poll question wanting to know what was the most impressive swim of the year. There were lots of performances that had swimming fans in awe, way too many to mention here, and I'm sure the four that we list in our poll are up for debate, and we hope you'll let us know that.
Here are the four performances that made our list of the top swims of the year, going alphabetically by name. To start, there's Kevin Cordes' 1:48.68 in the 200-yard breaststroke, done at last March's NCAA championships. Then we have the most recent performance on the list, Caeleb Dressel's 18.94 in the 50 freestyle from last weekend's junior nationals. Up next is the amazing 1500-meter freestyle by Katie Ledecky at the world championships, and we round out our choices with that 17.86 in the 50-yard freestyle by Vlad Morozov, done as a split on the third leg of Southern California's 200 free relay at the NCAAs. Those are your four choices. If you think someone else posted the best swimming performance of 2013, pick "other" in the poll and let us know in the article for this poll of the week segment.
We'll be back next Monday with the results of this poll, and introduce the final poll question of 2013.
