PHOENIX, Arizona, October 1. THE U.S. government has been shut down, citing a lack of funds to keep the federal government operating its normal day-to-day duties. This has trickled all the way down to the swimming and diving teams at the service academies across the country, including the Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. There’s a potential for the planned dual meets these schools have planned for October to be postponed or canceled entirely, depending on the length of the shutdown. The Naval Academy has a tri-meet scheduled for Thursday, and the decision on that meet is expected to be made soon, as is the decision about that extremely popular Army-Navy football game scheduled for Saturday.

USA Swimming this morning announced the nominees for the Golden Goggles Awards, its annual party to honor the best swimmers and coaches of the year. This is the first time we don’t see Michael Phelps in the nominees list since the Golden Goggles began in 2004, but there are plenty of top names in his place. Ryan Lochte has four nominations, including two in the best male performance of the year for winning the 200 back and 200 IM at the world championships and one for male athlete of the year. Missy Franklin has five nominations, including three in the relay performance of the year category, one in the race of the year and one for female athlete of the year. Katie Ledecky is nominated four times, including two for female race of the year, one for relay performance and one for female athlete of the year. Swimming fans can go to goldengoggles.com to vote for their favorites in the eight categories. Fan votes will account for a part of the final tally, and the winners will be announced at the gala in Los Angeles on November 24.
