Streamlined News: Mare Nostrum, Pan Am Masters Recaps

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 11. BARCELONA welcomed some of the world's best swimmers today on the second stop of the three-meet Mare Nostrum circuit, and Ruta Meilutyte was definitely the highlight of the day, breaking the European record in the 50 breaststroke with a 29.96. Meilutyte is the first woman under 30 seconds in a textile suit in the event, and now she's within two tenths of Jessica Hardy's world record. Of course we're now anxious to see what Meilutyte will do in the 100 breast tomorrow. Could she join Rebecca Soni as the only two people under 1:05 in the 100 tomorrow, or will that have to wait until world championships?

Also swimming well in Barcelona was Katinka Hosszu, who moved up the world rankings in the 400 IM with a 4:35.60 to sit at fifth in the world. Chad Le Clos miscalculated the pace of the 200 fly prelims and wound up sitting in ninth place, one spot out of the A final. He would go on to win the B final with a 1:57.02, a bit slower than Bence Bizco's 1:56.71 that won the A final.

Back here in the United States the Pan American Masters swimming championships has one more day to go, and today we saw just one world record fall. That was at the hands of 82-year-old Jean Troy, who posted a 5:05.64 to break her own world record in the 80-84 age group. We also want to give a shout out to US Masters Swimming Executive Director Rob Butcher, who has probably been more focused on his day job this week than competition, but stepped up and won the 50 breast in the 40-44 age group with a very respectable 30.23.
