Streamlined News: Recapping European Champs; Coutts No. 1 in Australia

PHOENIX, Arizona, November 26. WHILE we in the United States were feasting on Thanksgiving Day and shopping all weekend, several European stars were swimming fast at the European championships. Camille Muffat finally got that world record she had been chasing in the short course meters 400 free, breaking Joanne Jackson's record by five tenths with a 3:54.85. Muffat was a second under record pace at the halfway point, and held on to earn her second world record of the month. Muffat almost made it three world records in November, but couldn't get the 200 free standard of 1:51.17, swimming a 1:52.20.

Vlad Morozov was the standout swimmer on the men's side, setting a new world textile suit best time in the 100 free with a 45.68. The University of Southern California junior from Russia had a great meet, winning seven medals, two of them gold.

After a world record and European record at the French nationals, Yannick Agnel appears to be saving himself for the world championships, doing just what was needed to win the 200 and 400 freestyles, and also gaining a bronze medal in the 100 free. Agnel broke the world record in the 400 free last week and won at the European championships with a time that was two seconds slower.

Katinka Hosszu kept her great fall season going with three wins and four total medals. The Hungarian will be back to represent Hungary at the world championships in Turkey in three weeks.

Hannah Miley was one of the few people to stop the Katinka Hosszu train that rolled through the European championships, beating Hosszu by about five tenths in the 400 IM with a 4:23.47 and a European record. Miley also picked up silver medals in the 200 IM and 800 freestyle, setting herself up for some great things as well at the world championships.

Alicia Coutts was named Swimming Australia's athlete of the year on Saturday, an award that does not distinguish between genders. Coutts was the most successful Australian swimmer in London, taking five medals in all three relays, the 200 IM and 100 fly. Coutts' coach, John Fowlie, won coach of the year.
