Streamlined News: Highlights from Day Two at Dubai World Cup

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 3. SOUTH Africa had a good day at the pool in Dubai at the FINA World Cup, winning four events on the men's side. Darian Townsend had the best day, winning the 200 free with a 1:42.71, then coming back about an hour later to beat a tough field in the 200 IM. Cameron van der Burgh had a close win in his Olympic gold medal-winning event, the 100 breast, beating Glenn Snyders by just nine hundredths of a second. A few minutes later, Chad Le Clos set a South African record in the 100 fly with a 49.82.

But the day belonged to Katinka Hosszu, who won three events yesterday and picked up individual victories four through seven today in the 400 IM, 200 fly, 400 free and 100 IM. Hosszu did all four of these swims in the span of 90 minutes and picked up an additional $6,000 to win a total of $11,000 for the meet. She has a big lead in the points totals, which will make a difference if she plans to challenge for the overall circuit prize of $100,000.

Anthony Ervin is planning to attend all eight World Cup meets, and got off to a good start with a win today in the 50 freestyle with a 21.18. Ervin, the 2000 Olympic co-champion, beat a talented field that included George Bovell, Kyle Richardson and Roland Schoeman.

Therese Alshammar, last year's female overall champion, won her third race of the meet today, winning the 50 fly to pick up $4,500 total for the meet.

The mixed relays — two men and two women — made their debut at the World Cup in Dubai, and though not many teams participated, the events were held to test the viability for future appearances at world championships meets. Germany won the mixed medley relay yesterday, and Hungary held on to win the 200 free relay, with a very tired Hosszu holding off Ukraine's Andreii Govorov on the anchor leg.
