Streamlined News: Hungary Impressive at Europeans, USA Swimming Launches New Program, Olympic Trials Pool Under Construction

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 24. THE Hungarians were the stars of today's competition at the European championships in Debrecen. Four of the six gold medals went to the host country.

Boglarka Kapas started things off with an 8:26.49 in the 800 freestyle, which puts her fifth in the world right now. The second gold medal of the day went to Katinka Hosszu, who put together a very solid 200 IM time of 2:10.84. It's her best time of the year and faster than she swam at worlds last summer.

Daniel Gyurta moved up to third-fastest in the world with a 2:08.60 in the 200 breast, a time that is right on what he swam to win the world title last year. Only two Japanese swimmers are faster than him right now.

Laszlo Cseh and Bence Biczo went 1-2 for Hungary in the men's 200 fly. Cseh swam a 1:54.95 to make that three swimmers so far to go under 1:55: Takeshi Matsuda and Nick D'Arcy are the other two. Biczo's time of 1:55.85 is just a little slower than he went in yesterday's semifinals, but still among the top eight globally.

USA Swimming launched a new program called SwimToday, which gives everyone in the United States the ability to find a learn-to-swim or competitive swim program near them, as well as a guide to determine a particular swimmer's ability. Go to swimtoday.org to learn more.

Construction for the temporary pool for the U.S. Olympic Trials and the U.S. Masters nationals began yesterday in Omaha. Myrtha Pools is in charge of construction of the competition and warm-up pools, and they estimate water could be in the pools in 10 days. The CenturyLink arena will go from this … to this by the time the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational begins on June 8.
