Streamlined News: Ous Mellouli Tackling Olympic 10K Qualifier; Illinois Disabled Teen Suing to Swim in High School Meets

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 16. OUS Mellouli is one of the notable names on the newly-released list of scheduled participants in the upcoming Olympic 10K qualifying race in Portugal next month. In addition to defending his Olympic title in the 1500, Mellouli hopes to be a part of the 10K swim in London's Hyde Park. Mellouli will have to finish in the top 15 in the qualifying race for that to happen, and he'll be up against some big-time open water veterans, including Bulgaria's Petar Stoychev and Great Britain's David Davies, who was second in 10K at the 2008 Olympics.

An Illinois teenager is part of a lawsuit against the state's high school association that is barring her from competing in high school athletics because she's disabled. The lawsuit expected to be filed today cites discrimination by the Illinois High School Association, because they do not have rules that would accommodate disabled athletes in competitions. Callahan's school, Fenwick High School, allows her to swim in regular in-season meets, but the state isn't letting her participate in championship events. Attorneys for Callahan hope to have the matter resolved for next year, which would be her senior year.
