Streamlined News: March 27, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, March 27. STARTING today in Montreal is the Canadian Olympic Trials, and three of the swimmers at the meet will be resting easy, knowing they are already on the Olympic team. Brent Hayden, Martha McCabe and Ryan Cochrane earned their spots after winning medals at last summer's world championships: Hayden in the 100 free, McCabe in the 200 breast and Cochrane in the 1500 free. It's unclear if these three are also automatically selected for other events in London, or if they'll have to swim under the A cut in their second events. Others to watch this week include Julia Wilkinson, Mike Brown, Katerine Savard and 200 breast world record holder Annamay Pierse. Like every other country around the world, a top two finish doesn't guarantee selection to the Olympic team. Swimmers must also go under the FINA A standard in their events. With all eyes on Laure Manaudou now that she is headed to her third straight Olympic Games, news has broken that the French star has missed two out-of-competition drug tests, and could jeopardize her participation in the Olympics if she misses one more. The two missed drug tests came last September, when last-minute scheduling changes forced her to be away from her scheduled place at the proper time. If Manaudou does miss a third drug test, it's a two-year suspension under rules set by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Manaudou is not the first swimmer to face suspension for missing drug tests, but at the moment is the highest-profile swimmer, with her comeback story potentially set to end before the Olympics.
