Peter Busch: Welcome to the Morning Swim Show for Friday, January 20th, 2012. I'm your host Peter Busch Busch. In the FINIS Monitor today a pair of Kansas Jayhawks. The women's swim team just returned from a training trip to Puerto Rico and right now co-captains Shannon Garlie and Stephanie Payne join us in the FINIS Monitor from Lawrence, Kansas. Hey ladies welcome to the Morning Swim Show. How are you?

Stephanie Payne: Good. How are you?

Shannon Garlie: Good.

Peter Busch: Good, well Puerto Rico this winter instead of Kansas. You ladies must be so disappointed.

Shannon Garlie: Yeah.

Peter Busch: How was the trip?

Stephanie Payne: It was a lot of fun. It was a lot different from the past 3 years because we either went to Florida or California, and so this year was a lot of fun because it was, you know, further away and just the weather was perfect the entire time so it was a lot of fun.

Peter Busch: Geez, whose arm did you have to twist to get there Shannon?

Shannon Garlie: Whose arm did we have to twist?

Peter Busch: Yeah.

Shannon Garlie: No one's actually. Our coach organized it all and he gets really excited about our training trips and we work really hard to earn those and everything went really well, really smoothly so …

Stephanie Payne: Yeah, and this year we had, like, an invite around right after Thanksgiving. In the past 3 years we have gone like further places like Georgia or like Virginia, whereas this year we stayed closer to home and saved a lot of money and we went to Mizzou, and so that saved us money in order to be able to go to Puerto Rico, because obviously it costs more so that is also another reason why.

Peter Busch: Well pretty great college experience for sure and I noticed Stephanie Payne that you guys did some blogging while you were there and one of the blogs kind of jumped out at me it said "Training and competing outdoors is different because the sun zaps the energy out of you," huh?

Shannon Garlie: Yeah.

Stephanie Payne: Yeah.

Peter Busch: You felt a big difference. I mean we are used to training outdoors in Arizona I guess but we like it.

Stephanie Payne: Yeah it is definitely a lot different just because like especially in backstroke there is a sun … like the sun obviously and you kind of you know zigzag in the pool and it just I mean at least for me it zaps the energy out of me a lot faster than like when we are inside so…

Shannon Garlie: Plus, we would spend our time on the beach in the sun in between practices and that takes a lot of energy out of me too but...

Peter Busch: Ah, so the truth comes out. Well you ladies must have come back to campus the most tanned people in Lawrence, right?

Stephanie Payne: Yeah.

Shannon Garlie: I guess so.

Peter Busch: Alright so tell us about yourselves. You are both seniors. You are the co-captains. What do you swim, and is conference going to be the big meet for you this year or NCAAs? You go first Stephanie.

Stephanie Payne: I swim the 400 and 200 IM and the 200 butterfly and sometimes the 200 breaststroke but yeah Big 12 will be hopefully not my biggest meet. I am hoping to make NCAAs so yeah I'm really looking forward to Big 12's.

Peter Busch: Well you already have Olympic Trial cuts right?

Stephanie Payne: Yeah, so I guess that is my biggest meet this year so yeah.

Peter Busch: And what do you study?

Stephanie Payne: Journalism.

Peter Busch: Journalism!

Stephanie Payne: Yup.

Peter Busch: If I could talk you out of it I would but you know. How about you Shannon?

Shannon Garlie: I swim the 200, 500 free and the mile and I have been swimming the 100 free more this year, so I am excited about that. My biggest meet will probably be Big 12s. It would be neat to go to the NCAAs for a relay or something. It is really stinking fast but I'm trying my best.

Peter Busch: Really stinking fast. That is a very good way to describe it. And what do you want to do when you graduate?

Shannon Garlie: I'm not sure yet. My major is communications studies with a minor in leadership studies, and I am doing 4-1/2 years and I will be done in December.

Peter Busch: Very good ladies. Well congratulations on having a great winter break in Puerto Rico and good luck this college season.

Shannon Garlie: Thank you.

Stephanie Payne: Thank you.

Peter Busch: Alright ladies. That is Shannon Garlie and Stephanie Payne joining us from the University of Kansas and that is it for today's show. I'm Peter Busch Bush reminding you to keep your head down at the finish.
