University President, Olympic Champion Help U.S. Masters Swimming Promote Learn-To-Swim Month

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, April 3. U.S. Masters Swimming’s Learn-To-Swim initiative to get more adults in the water in April got a boost from Purdue University President Mitch Daniels, who was joined by several new adult swimmers this week during a special swim at the Purdue Aquatic Center.

According to an article in the Indianapolis Star, Daniels was joined in his regular mile-long swim by three locals who swam about 50 yards to help promote Learn-To-Swim month. The goal is to make adults more comfortable around water to reduce the high rate of drownings and convince parents to pass on the love of the water to their children. Ten people die every day from drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

IndyStar.com video report:

Daniels wasn’t the only high-profile personality to help spread the world about Learn-To-Swim Month. Olympic champion Misty Hyman was part of a segment on the Phoenix NBC affiliate to discuss the initiative.
