Bumpy Jones, Betty Lorenzi Set Masters National Records at YMCA Nationals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 16. BUMPY Jones continued his 80th birthday celebration last weekend at the YMCA nationals, resetting one of his own short course yards USMS records and adding another one at the YMCA Masters nationals. Betty Lorenzi also got in on the party, breaking three distance freestyle records.

Jones, who broke seven U.S. Masters Swimming national records in the 80-84 age group three weeks ago, lowered his own mark of 14:39.84 in the 1000 freestyle with a 14:24.73. When he set the 1000 free record three weeks ago, he did it as a split time during the 1650 freestyle. Jones added another record to his list, swimming a 1:21.97 in the 100 IM to take down Frank Piemme's mark of 1:22.75.

Lorenzi, 85, was unstoppable in the 85-89 age group in the distance freestyles. She started the meet with a 30:52.20 in the 1650 free, breaking Margery Meyer's record of 31:15.55. She followed it up by breaking another Meyer record in the 500 free with a 9:07.55, beating the record of 9:14.15. Lorenzi wrapped up her weekend with a 1000 free record swim of 18:40.21, bettering Meyer's 19:02.30.

Two relay national records also fell. Wilton Y's 45+ women's 400 free relay (Moss, Kupan, Wager, Gary) posted a 3:53.65 in the event, breaking New England Masters' record of 3:55.16. Sarasota Y's 55+ men's 400 relay (Groselle, Perout, Claflin, Allbritton) swam a 3:31.74, erasing the record of 3:32.08 held by a previous Sarasota team that included Groselle and Claflin.
