Jim McConica, Richard Schroeder and Rich Saeger Break Five Masters World Records in Mission Viejo -- August 13, 2012

MISSION VIEJO, California, August 13. MASTERS swimming legend Jim McConica, as well as 1988 Olympian Richard Schroeder, each set two Masters world records over the weekend at the Southern Pacific Masters Long Course Championships. Olympian Rich Saeger got in on the action as well, obliterating a world record himself.

McConica's world records came in the 60-64 age group, first in the 400 free, where he snuck under his own world record of 4:40.52 with a 4:40.00. Next up was the 800 free, and McConica, representing Ventura County Masters, smashed his world mark of 9:55.28 with a remarkable 9:35.50. McConica also owns the world records in the 50-54 age group in these events, as well as the world record in the 1500 free in the 55-59 age group.

Richard Schroeder, a 1988 U.S. Olympian in the 100 breast and gold medalist in the 400 medley relay, has an on-again, off-again relationship with Masters competition, but last weekend he came back in a big way to slice a few tenths off the world records in the 50 and 100 breaststrokes for the 50-54 age group. Schroeder, representing the Masters team at his alma mater at UC-Santa Barbara, swam a 1:09.23 in the 100 breast to erase Gary Patterson's record of 1:09.36. Next, he just dipped under the world record of 30.97 in the 50 breast with a 30.88. The former world record had been shared by Patterson and France's Olivier Borios.
