Nick Brunelli Sets Masters World Record in 50 Freestyle

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, November 3. NICK Brunelli returned to Masters swimming last weekend at the Dixie Zone short course meters championships, and left with a Masters world record in the 50 freestyle.

Brunelli, representing SwimMAC-Carolina Masters, swam a 21.98 in the splash-and-dash, breaking the Masters world record in the 30-34 age group of 22.13, set in 2009 by Thomas Rupprath. Brunelli's last official venture into Masters swimming was in 2005, when he was representing Sun Devil Masters in Arizona. At a Masters meet in December, shortly after winning 50 free titles at the Duel in the Pool and U.S. Open, Brunelli clocked a personal best of 21.18, which at the time was the fastest ever swum by an American, but did not count as an American record because it was not swum at a USA Swimming-sanctioned meet. According to FINA's website, the 21.18 was never submitted for a Masters world record, as the official mark for the 25-29 age group stands at 22.11.

Brunelli followed up the 50 freestyle with a USMS national record in the 100 IM, with a time of 55.77.

Several other members of the SwimMAC Elite Team used the meet to post quick times. Eugene Godsoe swam what is believed to be the fastest times ever swum in a Masters meet in the 100 butterfly (52.25) and 100 backstroke (51.91). Because FINA does not recognize times done by swimmers under 25 years old for Masters world records, the 23-year-old Godsoe will have to settle for USMS national records in the 18-24 age group. Godsoe completed a trifecta of national records with a 55.71 in the 100 IM.

Andrea Georoff also posted a national-record time of 26.01 in the 50 freestyle for the 25-29 age group, while Micah Lawrence, a member of the 2010 Pan Pacific team for the United States, earned a new national record in the 200 breast for the 18-24 age group with a 2:33.23.

Also getting into the national record party was Kate Mills, who set two records in the 18-24 age group in the 100 fly (1:01.22) and 400 IM (4:50.84).
