PHOENIX, Arizona, December 1. DECEMBER 2012 marks Swimming World Magazine's 49th male swimmer of the year award, and the 47th year for the women. The awards began in 1964, when Swimming World Magazine recognized the United States' Don Schollander as the best male swimmer in the world. The tradition has continued on ever since.

Americans Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps swept the World and American Swimmers of the Year awards for 2012. Franklin's win is the first time an athlete has won the three honors bestowed by Swimming World Magazine in a single year: High School, American and World Swimmer of the Year.

Regional winners were: Ye Shiwen and Sun Yang for Pacific Rim Swimmers of the Year, Kirsty Coventry and Chad le Clos for African Swimmers of the Year, Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Yannick Agnel for European Swimmers of the Year.

Every year, a panel of international Swimming World correspondents votes for the award winners. Watch the following Inside Swimming World Magazine video to hear and see all of the exciting content contained in this month's magazine!
