Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, Romano attended college at the University of Georgia as a member of the Bulldogs Swim Team. During her collegiate career, the 6'1" swimmer broke the American, U.S. Open and NCAA records in the 200-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay, both of which she continues to hold. She also helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2013 NCAA Division I women's team title.
At the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Romano anchored the women's 400m freestyle relay, which earned a gold medal and shattered the previous American record. She also earned another gold medal for her participation in the 400m medley relay.
Only weeks before competing in Barcelona, Romano snagged an impressive six medals at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. She anchored all three relays for Team USA, helping them earn a gold medal in the 4x200 free relay, silver in the 4x100 free relay and bronze in the 4x100 medley relay. She also swam in four individual events, winning silver in the 100 back and two bronze medals in the 50 and 100 free.
Back in 2012, the versatile swimmer competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials, where she finished seventh in the 200-meter freestyle and narrowly missed making the Olympic Team. With her spectacular 2013 season, we can clearly expect great things throughout the coming years as she sets her sights on Rio.
