Regis Jesuit Boys Win Colorado 5A State Championship Title

THORNTON, Colorado, May 19. THE Regis Jesuit boys swimming and diving team dominated the Colorado 5A State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the Veteran’s Memorial Aquatic Center, running away with the team title with 410 points. Cherry Creek finished second with 190 points, followed by Fairview with 179. It marked the Raiders’ 21^st state title in 23 years and fourth in a row.

Regis Jesuit kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Hennessey Stuart, Quinlan Stuart, Christopher Morales and William Pieseski touched first in 1:31.71. Boulder’s Chris Nicholson, Mick Bartholomew, PJ Stapleton and Christian Feiler touched second in 1:34.34, followed by Fort Collins’ Maxwell Holter, Austin Hill, Jessie Tao and James Piotrowski in 1:35.65.

After finishing third in the event a year ago, Highlands Ranch senior Nathan Mueller got to the wall first in the 200 free this time around, stopping the clock in 1:38.26. Regis Jesuit teammates Austin Phillips (1:39.25) and Christopher Dawson (1:39.98) also broke 1:40 to take second and third.

Hennessey Stuart picked up his second win of the meet and second straight individual title in the 200 IM, cruising to a final time of 1:47.77. Stuart had to hold off a late charge from Cherry Creek’s Jake Markham, who out-split Stuart by almost a second on the final 50 but came up short with a 1:48.58. Ryan Ball of Loveland claimed third in 1:50.58.

Douglas County/Castle View’s JP Beach led a quartet of swimmers under 21 seconds in the 50 free. Beach qualified first in 20.30, then finished with a 20.32 in finals for his first state title. Miles MacKenzie of Fairview out-touched Hunter Bains of Lewis-Palmer for second, 20.63 to 20.64.

In diving action, Regis Jesuit’s Kyle Goodwin won his third consecutive state title in the 1-meter with 559.25 points, comfortably ahead of Standley Lake’s Trent Kindvall (487.65) and Arapahoe’s Anthony Belitz (484.65).

Maxwell Holter picked up Fort Collins’ first state swimming title in several years after winning the 100 fly in 48.69. Jake Markham of Cherry Creek picked up his second runner-up finish of the night after touching second in 49.20. Regis Jesuit’s Mitchell Bruckman rounded out the top three in 50.54.

In the 100 free, Fairview senior Miles MacKenzie successfully defended his state title in the 100 free, holding off Lewis-Palmer’s Hunter Bains and Douglas County/Castle View’s JP Beach down the stretch to take first in 45.25. Bains touched second in 45.41, while Beach, the top qualifier in prelims, took third in the final in 45.49.

Nathan Mueller of Highlands Ranch won his second individual event of the meet in the 500 free, just missing the Colorado and 5A record of 4:26.20 with a 4:27.41. Regis Jesuit’s Christopher Dawson tried to close the gap over the final lengths but just fell short with a second place time of 4:28.87. Lakewood’s Aaron Sett took third in 4:33.91 after finishing 30^th in the same event last year.

After trailing for the entire race, Cherry Creek’s foursome of Eric Fuqua, Kyle Colley, Hunter Fuqua and Jake Markham chased down Fairview’s Justin Li, Miles MacKenzie, Caleb Van Boven and Alex Walton on the final 25 for the win in the 200 free relay, 1:24.13 to 1:24.60. Regis Jesuit’s William Pieseski, Christopher Morales, Christopher Dawson and Austin Phillips touched third in 1:25.30.

Hennessey Stuart picked up win number three in the 100 back in impressive fashion. After setting a new Colorado and 5A state record of 46.91 in prelims, Stuart finished just off that time in finals but was still four seconds ahead of the next best swimmer with a 47.24. Thomas Konde of Cherokee Trail touched second in 51.10, while Fort Collins’ Maxwell Holter earned another top three finish with a 51.25.

A year after finishing third in the 100 breast, Regis Jesuit’s Quinlan Stuart upgraded to first with a winning time of 57.20. Cherokee Trail’s Joshua Bedford made him work for it, making up half a second on Stuart on the final 50 to take second in 57.53. Stuart’s teammate, Theodore Koerner, placed third in 58.67.

Regis Jesuit put an exclamation point on a completely dominating performance with a new Colorado and 5A state record in the 400 free relay. Hennessey Stuart, Mitchell Bruckman, Christopher Dawson and Austin Phillips finished in 3:00.84 to erase Regis’ previous state record of 3:00.97 from the books. Cherry Creek’s Kyle Colley, Ander Thompson, Hunter Fuqua and Jake Markham wrapped up second place in the team standings with a 3:04.14 for second, while Fairview’s Caleb Van Boven, Michael Zarian, Alex Walton and Miles MacKenzie claimed third in 3:07.69.
