Olympic Medalists Martin Zubero and Greg Burgess Taking Reins at Episcopal School of Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Florida, May 14. OLYMPIC champion Martin Zubero is three days into his new tenure as head coach of the swimming program at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville and its club team the Amberjax. The former 200 backstroke world record holder is not wasting any time setting up a strong coaching staff, announcing today that he’s hired Olympic medalist Greg Burgess as assistant coach.

Zubero and Burgess have a shared history, with both graduating from the University of Florida and winning their Olympic medals at the 1992 Games. Zubero won the gold medal in the 200 back in front of a home crowd in Barcelona, a year after setting the world record in the event. Burgess was a silver medalist in the 200 IM at the 1992 Olympics. Both were standouts in their collegiate careers at Florida, winning multiple NCAA titles and breaking NCAA and U.S. Open records along the way. (Zubero was born in the United States but represented Spain internationally, thereby making him ineligible for American records.)

Zubero comes to the Episcopal School with many years of experience coaching at the age-group level. He previously worked with the Spartan Aquatic Club in Orange Park, Fla., while other coaching stints took place at Marlins of Raleigh and at his alma mater, Bolles School.

After retiring from competitive swimming in 1996, Burgess enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in several capacities all over the world including Iraq. According to a Facebook post on the Amberjax Swimming page, Burgess retired from the Marines this year and had been a coach in North Carolina, where he had been stationed.

Zubero and Burgess have some work to do in bringing the Episcopal school up the ranks in Florida high school swimming. The girls’ team finished 19th in last November’s 1A championships, while the boys placed 11th.
