NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, March 22. THE Greenwich Cardinals claimed their third Connecticut Open title in the last five years at the Connecticut Boys Open High School Championships March 22 at Yale University in New Haven.
The Cardinals dominated the competition, scoring 652 points to runner-up Fairfield Prep's 455.5. Pomperaug claimed third (391), followed by Brookfield (250.5) and Middletown (232.5).
Greenwich set state records in two of the three relays . The 200 medley relay of sophomore John Montesi, junior Iain Edmundson, plus seniors Julian Fraser and Alexander Lewis, combined for a 1:33.06, taking down both the 1:34.09 open mark Greenwich set in 2006 and the 1:34.06 state standard the Cardinals posted last year. To close the meet, juniors Edward Moss and Thomas Dillinger joined Montesi and Lewis for a 3:00.59. That shattered the state and open records set by Greenwich's 2004 team of 3:05.23.
Greenwich set a state record 1:24.19 in the prelims of the 200 free relay with the squad of sophomore Nicholas Hyden, Fraser, Moss and Dillinger. That didn't hold up in finals, however, as Fairfield Prep's quartet of seniors Nicholas Wargo, Brandon Cole and Bjorn Davis, with junior Bryce Keblish swimming third, took the record down to 1:23.18. The prior mark of 1:24.88 was set by Pomperaug in 2009. Greenfield finished second in 1:23.53.
Greenwich's Lewis, headed for Princeton in the fall, set state records in both the 100 free and the 100 back. His 44.16 in the 100 free bettered Andrew Grinalda's 2009 time of 44.77. Lewis had gone 44.57 in prelims to initially lower the record. In the 100 back, Lewis' 48.59 in prelims took out both his 2013 state standard of 49.88 from last year and Michael Pilyugin's 2012 Open mark of 50.21. Lewis' final time was 49.08.
Dillinger became a double event champion with his 4:36.50 in the 500 free and 1:49.64 in the 200 IM, and Moss added a victory in the 50 free (20.87).
Fairfield Prep's Wargo captured the 200 free in 1:41.27, and teammate Keblish held off Greenwich's Montesi in the 100 fly, 49.59 to 49.82. South Windsor senior Patrick Savidge earned a win in the 100 breast in 57.77.
In the diving competition, Hand-Madison freshman Tianyi Zeng put together 539.50 points, just ahead of New Canaan senior Bobby Ross (524.60).
