Glendale Edges Marquette For Missouri Girls High School State Title

ST. PETERS, Missouri, March 4. GLENDALE won the 2014 MSHSAA Girls State Swimming Championship on Saturday, Feb. 22 at St. Peters Rec Plex, scoring 210 points, just eight points ahead of Marquette. Park Hill South came in third with 183 points.

Park Hill South started off the night by pulling out the win in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.51; the relay was made up of Tori Beeler, Anna Riekhof, Helen Yeater, and Olivia McLain. Marquette followed in second in 1:49.31, while Parkway West finished third in 1:49.75.

Kelley Tackett from Rock Bridge smashed the competition in the 200 freestyle, coming in two-and-a-half seconds ahead of Macie Beairsto out of Glendale and Alyssa Lemon out of Marquette. They posted times of 1:49.93, 1:52.38, and 1:54.25, respectively.

Park Hill South’s Tori Beeler, who also swam on the winning 200 medley relay, then won the 200 IM in 2:04.12, ahead of Lee Summit’s Haley Hynes (2:05.18). Katiana Porporis out of Marquette took third in 2:07.85.

Three girls finished under 24 seconds in the 50 freestyle Saturday night. Samm Crocker from Parkway Wouth, Nikkie Sisson out of Glendale and Anna Miller from St. Joseph’s went times of 23.55, 23.56, and 23.94. This was the closest race of the evening as Crocker out-touched Sisson right at the end to get the title.

Kat Friese out of MICDS won diving by 7.50 points over Fort Zumwalt’s Marissa Green by scoring 413.90 points. Francesca Giganti out of Parkway West scored 395.45 points to round out the top three.

In the 100 fly, Parkway West’s Carolyn Kammeyer proved to be the best swimmer in the field, winning the event in 55.02. Maria Schroeder of Francis Howell finished 1.59 seconds back in 56.61, while Bolivar’s Emma Wall touched third in 56.65.

Nikki Sisson, the third place finisher in the 50 free, won Glendale’s first race of the evening, the 100 freestyle, coming in at 51.47. She touched ahead of Jamie Fitzpatrick out of Kirkwood (52.34) and teammate Madeline Nelson (52.57).

Rock Bridge’s Kelley Tackett, the 200 freestyle champion, won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:58.95. She was followed by MICDS’ Evie Mauze (5:01.64) and Blue Springs’ Ashley Sturman, who came in at 5:02.83. It marked the first top-three finish of the meet for both Mauze and Sturman.

St. Joseph’s Charlotte Cordova, Grayson Ram, Anna Miller and Grace Stiegemeyer out-touched Kirkwood 1:37.52 to 1:37.78 in the 200 yard freestyle relay to get their first win of the night. Eventual team champions Glendale came in third at 1:38.40.

Lee Summit’s Haley Hynes avenged her defeat in the 200 IM by winning the 100 yard backstroke in 54.37, crushing her main competition – Park Hill’s Beeler (56.79) and Marquette’s Abby Watson (56.84) — by over two seconds and just missing the state record.

In the final individual race of the evening, Blue Spring’s Corinne Rinne out touched Kearney’s Madison Strathman in the 100 breaststroke, 1:05.73 to 1:06.11. Park Hill South’s Anna Riekhof finished third by going a 1:06.70.

Glendale’s Macie Beairsto, Kaylee Sisson, Madeline Nelson and Nikki Sisson sealed the deal by winning the final 400 freestyle relay in a near-state-record time of 3:30.45, just .24 slower than the state record. Marquette followed in 3:34.83, and in third came St. Joseph’s (3:36.01).
