Jamestown Eagles, Grafton Clippers Top the Virginia 4A High School Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia, February 27. THE Jamestown Eagles (girls) and the Grafton Clippers (boys) claimed team titles at the Virginia 4A High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet took place February 21-22 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Girls
The Eagles soared to a first-place point total of 354. Second through fourth places was decided by just five points. Grafton claimed second (209), followed by Tabb (208) and Dominion (204). E.C. Glass rounded out the top five girls teams with 149 points.

Scoring valuable points for Jamestown were Joelle Vereb, who took charge in both the 50 free (23.89) and the 100 fly (55.83), and Margaret Williams, champion in both the 100 and 200 free (52.35 and 1:53.89). Vereb anchored the winning Eagles 200 free relay (1:38.78) with Taylor Vitaletti, Kylie Roehrle and Williams; Sara Niewola joined Vereb, Vitaletti and Williams on the second leg of the 400 free relay, which placed first in 3:38.27.

Eastern View’s Annie Boonie was also a two-event victor, posting a 54.54 in the 100 back and 2:05.76 in the 200 IM.

Also giving their teams first-place points in individual events were Hanover’s Sarah Browning (500 free, 5:10.16) and C.T. Skorcz from E.C. Glass (100 breast, 1:09.78). The diving competition went to Fluvanna County’s Anna Hurdle with her combined score of 208.60 points.

Maddy Rymer, Makenzie Katzer, Rachel Rymer and Cait Horner began the meet with a win for Grafton in the 200 medley relay (1:51.61).

Boys
The Clippers combined for 295 for their team victory. Tabb was second with 224 points, followed by Jamestown (175), Heritage (159) and King George (141.5).

Grafton’s Jonathan Spires finished first in the 100 and 200 free with times of 46.86 and 1:42.62, respectively. Teammate Andrew Ferguson splashed his way to a 21.83-21.92 finish in the 50 free over Churchland’s Scott Harrington. The duo helped their team to victories in the 200 free relay (1:27.22) with Tyler Titsch and Nathan Kimbel; they finished out the meet with a 3:14.17 to capture the 400 free relay.

Taking home individual trophies were Eastern View’s Owen van Krimpen (500 free, 4:42.15), Nansemond’s Logan Eubanks (100 back, 53.61), Tabb’s James Kegelman (100 breast, 58.61), Ricardo Bonilla-Vazquez from King George (100 fly, 52.56) and Blake Nowakowski of Jefferson Forest (200 IM, 1:54.99).

Bryce Campanielli, Anna Hurdle’s teammate at Fluvanna County, scored 451.95 points to win the diving event.

Heritage’s squad of Tim Burris, Phillip Crouch, Michael Burris and Jake Schroth combined for a 1:40.24 in the 200 medley relay.
