High School State Championships: Texas 4A

AUSTIN, Texas, February 22. THE Alamo Heights girls squad claimed their first team title since 1973, and the Wakeland boys team earned its first-ever championship at the Texas 4A High School Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet took place February 21-22 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center at the University of Texas, Austin.

Girls
The Alamo Heights Mules claimed first with 202 points. They were led by the state record-setting 200 free relay of Lauren Cuda (senior), Elizabeth Ryan (sophomore), Ellery Parrish (freshman) and Anelise Diener (junior). The quartet posted a 1:36.39, and also posted a winning 3:39.93 in the 400 free relay.

Finishing in second was Frisco (176 points), followed by Stratford (157), Magnolia West (154) and Highland Park (140).

Vandegrift’s quartet of junior Madison Ibrahim, senior Samantha Bassman, freshman Hannah Palacios and sophomore Jade Federlin combined for a 1:47.63 triumph in the 200 medley relay. Bassman claimed first in the 100 breast (1:04.90)>

Highland Park junior Kate Boyer swept the sprint freestyle races, going 23.44 in the 50 free and 50.85 in the 100 free. Destiny Nelson, a Prosper junior, also scored first-place points twice in the 200 IM (2:00.59) and 100 back (54.93).

Jessica Sloan, who will head to Texas A&M after graduating from Magnolia West this year, finished first in the 500 free (4:49.62). On the other end of the spectrum, three freshmen claimed their first high school state titles: El Paso’s Victoria Garcia (100 fly, 56.99), Legacy’s Haley Yelle (200 free, 1:48.79) and Alamo Heights’ Sine Scribbick (diving, 457.70).

Boys
The Wakeland Wolverines put together 173 points for their initial victory. There was a close battle for the next four spots. Friendswood came out two points ahead of Kingwood Park for second, 133 to 131. Frisco and Flour Bluff tied for fourth with 126 points apiece.

Wakeland was led by senior Brayden Seal. The Ohio State-bound senior placed first in both the 200 and 500 free (1:38.24 and 4:25.71). Seal led off the Wolverines’ winning 400 free relay with Nathan Ciatti (sophomore), Mitchell Kline (senior) and Samuel Kline (sophomore).

Angleton’s Carter Wallace was also victorious in two events. The senior topped the field in both the 200 IM (1:51.68) and the 100 free (45.77).

Finn Scribbick, Sine’s brother, became the first diver in Division 4A history to claim the diving title all four years with this year’s total score of 531.50.

Other individual champions included Flour Bluff junior Anthony Hauglum (50 free, 20.94); Everett Mahlmann, a Brenham senior (100 back, 51.69); Tomball junior Trevor Strong (100 breast, 57.29); and Texas senior Chirs Radomski (100 fly, 49.84).

Kingwood Park’s 200 medley relay squad of Ryan Logan (freshman), David Stolarz (senior), Sam Poulin (junior) and Brandon Gillespie (senior) posted a winning 1:36.06. Taking charge of the 200 free relay was Flour Bluff’s quartet of seniors Phillip Ugarte, Miljan Kekovic and Andrew Byerly, with Hauglum anchoring in 1:25.98.
