High School State Championships: New York Girls

ITHACA, New York, November 17. THREE state and one meet record fell during the New York Girls State Public High School Championships Nov. 16-17 at Ithaca College.

Clarence High School claimed state records in both freestyle relays. In the 200 free relay, the quartet of juniors Rebecca Anthone, Victoria Butler, Dina Rommel plus senior Claire Willis combined for a 1:35.75 to erase Ithaca's 2007 time of 1:36.19 from the books. Junior Sydney Modeas joined Rommel, Anthone and Willis in the 400 free relay to set a state record 3:28.72. Niskayuna set the previous standard at 3:28.84 last year.

Clarence made it a relay sweep with its 1:47.20 in the 200 medley relay with the quartet of sophomores Maddie Jacumski and Dorotea Tou, plus Butler and Rommel.

Niskayuna senior Kina Zhou, part of last year's record-setting 400 free relay, claimed the state record in the 100 free with her 50.14. The previous record, set by Richelle Depold back in 1989, was 50.53. Zhou also posted a meet record 1:48.30 in the 200 free. Also going home with two event triumphs was Sewanhaka senior Olivia Chan in both the 200 IM (2:03.31) and the 100 breast (1:02.83).

Rommel touched out Pittsford freshman Katie Smith in the 50 free, 23.32-23.37. Others claiming event victories were Massapequa junior Molly Treble (500 free, 4:52.27), Monroe-Woodberry senior Morgan Faircloth (100 back, 55.94) and Jericho senior Trudiann Patrick (100 fly, 56.15).
