SULPHUR, Louisiana, November 22. SAINT Scholastica's girls squad collected their third straight title, and Ruston repeated as boys champions, at the Louisiana Division 2 High School Swimming Championships today at the Sulphur Aquatic Center.
Saint Scholastica collected 495 points to gain victory, with Ruston coming in second (253) just ahead of the Academy of the Sacred Heart (237). Caddo Magnet placed fourth (154), followed closely by the fifth-place South Lafourche (147).
Saint Scholastica swept the relay events. Seniors Kristen Jennings, Margaret Eckert and Gabby Regard, with junior Madeleine Rawls swimming the second leg, combined for a 1:55.48 in the 200 medley relay. Seniors Anne Bailey Gurault, Carley Boye and Emily Prieto joined Eckert for a 1:46.51 in the 200 free relay. Sophomore Katherine Stulin and junior Madeleine Rawls joined Jennings and Prieto on the 400 free relay (3:46.88).
Individually, Jennings captured the 100 back for the third straight year with her 1:00.04, and Rawls earned her second consecutive triumph in the 100 breast (1:08.97). Caddo Magnet junior Marin Tichenor also successfully defended her 200 free victory from last year with her 2:01.70.
South Terrebonne sophomore Payton Gold doubled in the sprint free events, posting times of 25.04 in the 50 free and 55.00 in the 100 free. Laura Bruce, a sophomore at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, finished first in the 100 fly (59.03), and Ruston freshman Claudia Perry picked up a win in the 500 free (6:05.94).
By just one-half point--347 to 346.5--Ruston held on to its title from last year over Holy Cross. Caddo Magnet finished in third (254), followed by Central (180) and South Lafourche (138).
Ruston was helped greatly with their freestyle relay victories. Juniors Austin Meng, Nolan Lofton and Morgan Meyer joined senior Tatman Bernard for a 1:33.32 in the 200 free relay. Meng and Meyer were joined by junior Ben Sawyer and sophomore Robert Kyte for a 3:24.46 in the 400 free relay. Meyer placed first in both the 100 and 200 free for the second straight year (47.30 and 1:42.54). Kyte topped the field in the 200 IM with his 2:06.12.
Anthony McDonald, a senior at Caddo Magnet, finished first in the 100 breast for the second time (1:01.48) and also captured the 100 fly (54.90). McDonald also swam on the winning 200 medley relay with junior Kyle Dockendorf, freshman Fredric Siskron and junior Alexander McDonald (1:46.13).
Holy Cross sophomore Paxton DeForest and Academy of the Sacred Heart senior Zachary Harrison tied for first in the 100 back (59.01). Earlier in the meet, Harrison gained his second event win in the 50 free in 22.53.
Opelousas' Coby Deville completed the 500 free in a winning 5:56.49.
